The term horsetail refers to Equisetum Arvense. The drug is dried sterile stems that contain:

  • Mineral salts (18-20%, abundant potassium)
  • Saponins (about 8%)
  • Silica (5-6%)
  • Organic acids: vitamin C, cinnamic acid, dicaffeicotartaric, oxalic and others
  • Flavonoids: especially isoquercetin
  • Traces of alkaloids: equispermine and laustrine

Phytotherapy

Thanks to the mineral salts present, herbal medicine recommends its use in the presence of osteoporosis, in the after-effects of bone fractures, and in the case of brittle nails and damaged hair.

In external use, decoction packs, Horsetail is useful for promoting the healing of wounds and skin ulcers. Oral rinses are helpful with mouth ulcers and sore throat.

Cosmetics

The abrasive properties of horsetail (Silica) are exploited for the production of cosmetics for skin peeling. This favors the use of the plant in the prevention of wrinkles and skin aging.

Horsetail finds some space as a mild diuretic and haemostatic in the presence of hemorrhoids and epistaxis.

Agriculture

The horsetail, thanks to the high content of silicon and sulfuric salts, exerts a fighting action against fungal diseases and reinforces the cuticular layer of the leaves which represents the first great defense that plants put in place to defend themselves from external attacks .

Side effects

There are no limitations of use; consult your doctor before taking horsetail in combination with synthetic diuretics.
