Euphorbium is an acrid yellow/brown resin, consisting of the concreted milky juice of Euphorbia. In former times euphorbium was valued in medicine for its drastic, purgative and emetic properties.
The latex contains an ultra potent capsaicin analog tested in clinical trials to treat neuropathic pain.
Euphorbium's capsicin-like molecule can interact with a vanilloid receptor on primary sensory neurons mediating pain (nociception) and neurogenic inflammation and has been used as a starting point in the development of a novel class of analgesics.
Desensitization has been tested in clinical trials to evaluate its potential to relieve neuropathic pain, as in diabetic polyneuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia.
